Be in the Moment

Thinking about the mistakes you made in the past? Thinking about what you're going to do in the future? Thinking about the end before even getting started? Forget all these. Look around you. What is happening? Is something amazing happening? If yes, enjoy it. Stop thinking too much about something which has already happened or is going to happen. Be mindful. Take care of your body and mind. Take a moment and start to practice being present. So, how to start the practice? Just breathe... There is no person in this world who has no problems. Everyone has their problems. But the problems seem big or small by the way you think about them. Your thoughts about them can be positive or negative. If you think about those problems with a positive mind, you feel that there is nothing to worry about. But if you think about those problems with a negative mind, even small problems feel like something big and impossible to solve. Thinking is good. But overthinking can be bad. It takes us away from the present. When this happens. Take a 3-minute breath. Start by slowing down. Step away from thinking. Bring yourself to the moment. For the first minute, ask yourself:

  • Where am I
  • Who is around me?
  • What am I thinking?

These questions make you think about the present. For the next 2 minutes, direct attention away from your thoughts and focus on your breathing. Do this as many times as you want.

Savour the moment. Savour means to taste and enjoy completely. Each day, choose a different task to savour. Focus on things that you usually rush to do, like brushing your teeth, taking a shower, washing dishes etc. Do each task slowly. Don’t hurry. Don’t worry about getting it done. Instead, focus on it. Focus on each and every step of it. Do it without distractions. If you have a list of things to be done, do one thing at a time. Don’t start the task until you’ve finished something completely.

Experience all 5 senses. Our senses help us experience things fully. It makes you aware of your surroundings. Try this activity: Find 5 things you can see. Do this without distraction.

  • Find 3 things you can hear. Focus on one sound at a time.
  • Find 2 things you can smell. Try to recognize them blindfolded too.
